Alpha antagonists in cataract surgery

چکیده
Reply: The finding that an antipsychotic medication with strong a-antagonist properties may have caused IFIS is most interesting. Now that this syndrome of IFIS has been defined, it will be interesting to see to what extent a-antagonists besides tamsulosin are associated with this syndrome. The technique of direct intracameral injection of phenylephrine certainly deserves further study.dDavid F. Chang, MD, John R. Campbell, MD

PURPOSE To investigate the effects of alpha-1 adrenergic receptor antagonists for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) regarding potential risks of complications in the setting of cataract surgery. AIM To address recommendations, optimal control therapy, voiding symptoms and safety within the setting of cataract surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS A comprehensive literature review...

INTRODUCTION Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and cataract formation are common in older people. Medical management of symptomatic BPH is often preferred to surgical treatment as surgery increases the risk of morbidities, whereas, surgery is the main form of treatment to restore sight in patient with cataract. The clinical treatment of BPH is either alpha-1 adrenergic antagonist alone or comb...
متن کاملASCRS White Paper: clinical review of intraoperative floppy-iris syndrome.
Intraoperative floppy-iris syndrome (IFIS) is associated with the use of systemic alpha(1)-antagonists, and tamsulosin in particular. The incidence and severity of IFIS are variable; however, the syndrome is associated with a higher rate of cataract surgical complications, especially when the condition is not recognized or anticipated. Questioning cataract patients preoperatively about current ...
متن کاملIntraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome (IFIS) Associated with Systemic Alpha-1 Blockers ASCRS and AAO Educational Update Statement
Since intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) was first described in 2005, its association with the systemic alpha-1 adrenergic antagonist, tamsulosin (Flomax®, Boehringer-Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Ridgefield, CT), has become well established [1-7]. The clinical manifestations of IFIS complicating cataract surgery are poor preoperative pupil dilation, iris billowing and prolapse, and ...

Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome (IFIS) has received a significant amount of attention and subsequent research since it was first reported in 2005 (Bell et al., 2009; Blouin et al., 2007; Chang & Campbell, 2005; Chang et al., 2007; Oshika et al., 2007; Srinivasan et al., 2007; Takmaz & Can, 2007). Current and former uses of alpha-1 adrenergic receptor (α1AR) antagonists—most notably tamsulos...
